William McKinley Papers, Series II 1878-1901

William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, served in the American Civil War, and practiced law in Canton, Ohio, where he served as prosecuting attorney for Stark County 1869-1871. In 1876, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was Governor of Ohio 1891-1896. First elected President of the United States in 1896, he was reelected in 1900. He was assassinated in September 1901. The collection consists of editors' copies and page proofs of McKinley's speeches as President, as well as an index for the book Speeches and Addresses of William McKinley. This collection also includes a small number of speeches made by McKinley's Executive Cabinet and some speeches he made as a Representative of Ohio to the United States Congress.

President William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States. He was beginning his second term as President after winning the election in 1900. On Sept. 5, 1901 he and his wife were attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York when he was shot by as assassin waiting in line to shake his hand.
